Frequently Asked Questions

What is the origin of the name Philip Martin's and how do you pronounce it?

Philip comes from the name of the founder's first son, Filippo, while Martin comes from the name of his daughter Martina. The third son Tommaso gives his name to the Tommy's line and now from this year he also gives his name to Philip Martin's Academy: Tommy's Academy. It is pronounced "Filip Martins".

Where are Philip Marin's products made? Are they made in Italy?

All Philip Martin's products are made in Italy, precisely in Veneto, by Italian producers. For this reason we decided to put MADE OF ITALY in the logo, taking a stylistic license to make it clear that the products are all Italian products, made in Italy, by Italians.

What are the vision and values of the Philip Martin's brand?

The philosophy is based on 5 foundations that are well present and shared by all Philip Martin's men and women:

  • BIO-ORGANIC. The intoxicating balance between nature and science in innovative, patented and certified plant formulas. Natural and functional active ingredients, sought after to make the product perform.
  • GREEN. Bio-compatibility, respect for the environment and social responsibility are enclosed in the perfect combination of Bio-Organic active ingredients and Green chemistry. A union that makes each product effective, without the use of toxic substances.
  • SENSORY. Philip Martin's wellbeing is a journey in which taste, smell and the resulting sensations lead the person to dream and relive unique moments. The resulting pleasure is the soul of the company's creations.
  • LUXURY. The pleasant moment, the well-being of one's body and mind, the pride in looking in the mirror: Philip Martin's leads to luxury, intrinsic to each of us, with sublime blends.
  • UNIQUENESS. Philip Martin's is not just a product, but a system that includes evolution, growth, competence, skills in an engaging way and with a strong personality. The training, consultancy, philosophy and concept store are designed to make each path unique.

Are Philip Martin's products tested on animals?

Philip Martin’s does not carry out or commission animal testing, according to EU
regulations (EC) 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. EU guidelines state that the use
of the claim “cruelty free” could imply that other companies aren’t, and this could be
misleading. Considering this we have decided not to brag about something which is
forbidden by law anyway, therefore the products do not carry the claim or symbols
connected to the absence of animal testing. It’s important to add that the logos that
represent the “bunny/cruelty free” claim, which often require a subscription to
certain private companies, are not compulsory or necessary to guarantee the
respect of current regulations.

Is it possible to receive assistance in choosing Philip Martin's products?

We have created an email to which our technicians will answer all questions relating to assistance on both Skin Care and Hair Care products: info@philipmartins.it

Does Philip Martin's do courses for professionals?

Of course, we have created an academy this year called Tommy's Academy, where we organize courses for hairdressers and courses for beauticians. Each professional is accompanied on the use of products, technical support, on the stimulation of their creativity with stylistic courses, on massages dedicated to each cosmetic line, for beauticians.

Do Philip Marin's products contain allergens?

Some products contain fragrances that contain allergens. They are written behind each product package. For particular questions, please ask for more information by writing to technicalsupport@philipmartins.it.

Do Philip Martin's products contain gluten?

We cannot exclude that some products, especially during some processing stages, have been contaminated by ingredients that contain gluten. However, no link has been shown between skin absorption and celiac disease.

Do Philip Martin's products contain parabens?

In no Philip Martin's product you will find parabens. The Parabens used to preserve the products have been replaced by naturally derived ingredients such as vitamin C and E. As you will see the Pao (Period after open) that is the storage time of the product after opening, indicated on each product, does not exceed never 6 or 12 months, after which the product must be replaced with a new one. This indicates a lack of parabens which keep for years, but are considered by us to be harmful chemistry.

Do Philip Martin's products contain silicones?

They are present only in some of our products, because they are essential for the function of those products. The silicones we use derive from silicon and are defined as "volatile", they are easily removed from the hair with a shampoo and do not start the performance of technical treatments.

Do Philip Martin's products contain sulfates?

We don't use SLS or SLES in our shampoo. However, we make use of Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate and many other surfactants derived from babassu and coconut. These are all foaming ingredients used for cleaning and therefore have similar functions. The difference is that the starting ingredients used to make these foaming ingredients are of the vegetable type (coconut or babassu).

Do Philip Martin's products contain nickel?

Nickel is a heavy metal found in many commonly used objects and foods and can only be present in cosmetics in technically unavoidable traces. Neither Philip Martin's nor other cosmetic companies are in a position to give the certainty of the absolute absence of this substance in their products.

Do Philip Martin's products contain fragrances?

Yes, Philip Martin's products contain fragrances. An element that distinguishes our brand is Sensoriality, this makes the beauty routine and professional treatments an unforgettable moment.

Do Philip Martin's products contain alcohol?

Some Philip Martin's products contain alcohol, this is essential in some formulations to solubilize active ingredients or resins. Our formulas are perfectly balanced so as not to damage the stem and skin.

Do Philip Martin's products contain nanomaterials?

No, our products do not contain nanomaterials.

Do Philip Martin's products contain preservatives?

Yes, our products contain preservatives. Any product containing water is at risk for microbial contamination. To prevent this possibility we use food preservatives and, in any case, allowed by the European Regulation.

Do Philip Martin's products contain UV protection?

Yes, even though it is not possible to calculate the sun protection factor (SPF) of hair products, as they are applied to the hair and not to the skin.

Are Philip Martin's products natural or organic or bio?

In Philip Martin’s products there are ingredients from both natural (in certain cases
from specific organic farming) as well as synthetic sources. The synergy and
combination of these types of ingredients provide excellent performance,
professional quality and optimal conditions for product preservation and stability.
The list of ingredients on each product can be consulted directly in the salon, with
the support of the hairdresser. Please note that there is no specific regulation that
allows for the disassociation of natural/organic products from other product
categories. Natural/organic products are a part of the cosmetic definition given by
the EU – they must therefore respect the requirements connected to safety and
product information. Contrary to the common perception of consumers, “natural” or
“organic” ingredients (and products) are not necessarily safer than ingredients of
“synthetic” origin.

Philip Martin's products are vegan?

“There are no specific regulations that distinguish vegan cosmetics from other
product categories, hence these products are classified under the definition of
cosmetics given by the EU and must respect the requirements established by these
norms. The term “vegan” is used by companies for marketing and communication
purposes. If by “vegan”, one is referring to products that do not contain animal
ingredients or sub-products, then many Philip Martin’s products could be
considered to be vegan. However, even though a large percentage of our products
do not contain animal-derived ingredients, there are others which contain beeswax,
keratin derivatives and caviar, for example. The composition of the products is
always given on the packaging and verifies the presence or lack of any ingredients
that are not suitable for vegans, and this check can be done directly by the
consumer. By saying “vegan” one is referring to products obtained via processes
without reactants that are animal-derived and/or excludes ingredients tested on
animals, then this becomes more difficult to establish in terms of whether the
product is vegan or not. The reactants do not appear on the ingredients list, and the
confirmation/denial of their use and their origin is very difficult to trace. If “vegan”
means to include the claim “not tested on animals”, it is important to remember that
EU guidelines state that this claim is misleading, because all the components in
cosmetic products in the present day on the market must have been analysed via
animal testing in the past and this was historically acceptable, to ensure that these
products would not damage consumers. It is more likely that those consumers who
are sensitive to a vegan lifestyle lean towards the amplest meaning of the word.
Considering the above statement, in the respect of these consumers and EU
guidelines, we do not claim that our products are “vegan”, even if those products do
not contain animal ingredients.

Do Philip Martin’s products contain peanuts and/or other nuts?

Ingested peanuts are often responsible for allergic reactions, which can be severe.
The main nuts involved in food allergies are almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashew,
pecan, Brazil, pistachio and macadamia nuts. There are documented cases of
cross-reactivity between different types of nuts and legumes. Considering this,
determining whether ingredients derived from these substances are present or not
requires extreme prudence and caution. Even if ingredients obtained from peanuts
or nuts (e.g. almond oil) are present in some of our formulas, these are not added
to most of our formulas. In the latter, we cannot certify the complete absence of
these substances. In the production of our cosmetics, a large number of raw
materials from various suppliers are used. Even the machinery, locations and
production processes are varied. This complexity makes it impossible to guarantee
that our products are 100% free of traces of these substances that could give an
allergic reaction to those individuals who are sensitive to peanuts, nuts and

Can hair colourants irritate or provoke allergies?

In people with a predisposition, yes, as can any other substance. For this reason,
those people who know they are sensitive to certain ingredients can and must
carefully read the labels before using a product or tell their hairdresser they have a
particular sensitivity before a technical service. We advise to always proceed with a
patch test – how to do this is written in detail on the packaging/leaflet of the Philip
Martin’s hair colour being used. It’s important to avoid contact with colourants if,
following the patch test, reactions such as blotches or itchiness occur. It’s important
to avoid contact with colourants if the client has a sensitive, irritated or damaged
scalp, or if the person has had reactions in the past due to hair colourants. All Philip
Martin’s colours have warnings and instructions for their use which, if followed
scrupulously, minimize or avoid the risks of irritation or allergic reactions.

Can I use Philip Martin’s products if I have a food allergy to milk and its derivatives?

All of Philip Martin’s products doesn’t contain milk proteins. A food sensitivity to a
particular substance does not necessarily imply that there will be a skin allergy to
the same substance, however, this cannot be excluded entirely. A deeper analysis
can be done by a qualified doctor, therefore, in the case of doubt, we suggest you
read the ingredients list on the product carefully and ask for clarification and further
information from your doctor.

Can I use Philip Martin’s hair colour products, during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Although we select our ingredients to ensure high skin tolerance, we recommend
you to follow the advice of your gynecologist. During pregnancy skin sensitivity is
higher and so there is an increased risk of allergy even in women who have never
had such problems.
For this reason, we do not recommend the application of any hair colour in the first
trimester of pregnancy and, as far as the other months, we advise to ask the
opinion of the gynecologist: Some recommend the use of natural colors from the
4th month, others recommend it only after pregnancy or breastfeeding.

shine. In our body, ammonia is a product produce in the body for the activity of
many tissues, but most of it, it comes from the metabolism of food proteins and
intestinal bacterial fermentations. It is also in the food field, since it is a bakery
leavening agent. It must not be confused with the ammonia used for housekeeping
even if they have the strong smell in common.

Hair color Philip Martin's contains Mea?

Yes in Organic Base Color and Split Color. MEA is an alkaline - used hair alkalinizing used in oxidation colouring. The main advantage of Mea is the less chemical smell in relation to ammonia, used at low concentration, there is no problem with colour performance and hair protection. The Mea molecule is much larger (it is a liquid) does not evaporate like the ammonia molecule (a gas), so that is why it does not smell. This also means that the MEA is
harder to remove from hair and can remain on the scalp/hair after shampoo and
continue the oxidation process. In the case of Philip Martin's the concentration of
MEA in our colour is the least that can be used into a professional coloring to
ensure the performance. In order to facilitate its removal, the Oleic Acid has been
